About the Author

When I became a mother, I was very young and didn’t question the traditional care I was given postpartum, much of which I didn’t understand. I remember my mother, her sisters and my grandmother painstakingly preparing a medley of medicinal herbs and foods that they compelled me to consume.

Times change. I was faced with reluctance from my daughters when they blessed me with grandchildren. They resisted the traditional postpartum care I offered. Whether this was due to contemporary influence, or the newfound stigma against cultural and traditional practices, is uncertain.

What I do know is that they questioned everything. I’ve had to research every step to allay their doubts.

Their uncertainty, and my need to care for them the way my mother cared for me, has led me on a journey of discovery culminating in this handbook. There will come a time when our mothers are no more. With that, the value, beauty, and wisdom of our traditions would perish. This little handbook serves as a desperate reminder of the importance of traditional postpartum care that most modern mothers overlook. I’ve divided the book into sections and parts for it to serve as an easy-to-access guide for the caregiver, be it the mother, aunt, sister, or husband of the new mum. If I succeed in making postpartum life less overwhelming for you and yours, dear reader, I can rest easy knowing I’ve achieved my goal.

Yours sincerely, Jahan Ara.
